NO PRESIDENT MAKES REFORMS THAT WILL LEAD TO HIS DOWNFALL, EXCEPT JONATHAN – SHEHU SANI

Former federal lawmaker and activist, Shehu Sani, has said that no politician has ever made electoral reforms that led to their downfall apart from former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sani spoke in Abuja on Thursday as one of the discussants at the first Roundtable of Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, with the theme, the Role of the Judiciary in Nigeria’s Democratic Sustainability.’

The former Senator, who represented Kaduna central senatorial district in the 8th assembly, said there is no integrity among politicians.

“Well, I had the privilege of being in the civil society and I’ve been in politics. And if you mix these two experiences you’ll be able to know the two sides and also to be able to understand where the issues are,” he said.

“As activists, our thinking fundamentally differs from politicians. I’m still trying to find out if there’s any electoral reform Nigerian politicians cannot reconvent.

“We talk about the judiciary as the last hope of the common man, why are the political parties not the last hope of the common man, why is INEC not the last hope of the common man, why is the Presidency, the military, Senate and House of Reps not the last hope of the common man?

“We want a perfect judiciary in an imperfect system. In the field of activism, we’ve two sets of ideas – this is wrong and this is right – politicians don’t have that.

“We expect more from our judiciary. No president will make electoral reform that would lead to his downfall in office, only Jonathan.

“Only Jonathan appointed a Chairman of INEC he never knew and never met. Only Jonathan can introduce a data capturing machine and ended up being captured,” he said.

LP CRISIS: INEC RECOGNISES ABURE FACTION AFTER COURT JUDGEMENT The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has finally obeyed the court order compelling it to recognize the Julius Abure leadership of the Labour Party. In a letter addressed to Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the Secretary of the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, invited the Labour Party to the fourth consultative meeting with the political parties. A Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier declared that the 2024 Labour Party national convention held in Nnewi in March was valid, constitutional and in line with all laid down laws in Nigeria. In a judgement made by Justice Emeka Nwite, the court went further to compel INEC to grant due recognition and all privileges to the Labour Party’s National Working Committee as led by Barrister Julius Abure. Speaking to journalists after the meeting with INEC on Thursday, the National Secretary of the LP, Umar Farouk Ibrahim said that though the party was unjustly excluded from previous engagements, he was satisfied that INEC has obeyed the court order and that the party has now resumed seat amongst the other 18 political parties. He also said that with this development, the party is set for the rest of the political activities including the Anambra governorship election as announced by the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. He said, “With the issue of leadership now completely resolved, I urge every member of the party to rally round the Abure leadership. What transpired is only a family affair and we will as a family work towards restoring confidence to the party and every aggrieved or misled member of the party. “The Labour Party will come back stronger but we need everyone to join in the process of rebuilding the paper. It is a no victor nor vanquish situation. We are all winners. The party is however supreme and every member must work towards achieving set targets of the party.”

PDP IN CRISIS BECAUSE SUPREME COURT ALLOWED WARD CHAIRMAN TO SUSPEND NATIONAL CHAIRMAN – JONATHAN

PDP IN CRISIS BECAUSE SUPREME COURT ALLOWED WARD CHAIRMAN TO SUSPEND NATIONAL CHAIRMAN – JONATHAN Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has cautioned the judiciary against making pronouncements that can be detrimental to the nation’s democracy.Jonathan, who spoke on Thursday in Abuja at the 67th birthday celebration of Prof. Mike Ozekhome (SAN), said he is disturbed by the judgements emanating from various courts on political matters in the country recently. The former Nigerian leader specifically lamented the decision of the Supreme Court that a ward chairman of a political party could suspend the National Chairman of the party. According to him, the apex court ruling is responsible for the current crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and had also caused problems for the All Progressives Congress (APC) previously. Jonathan argued that such court pronouncements could be likened to turning a cone upside down, which increases its propensity to fall. “When a cone is turned upside down, it cannot stand because any little thing that touches it will fall,” Jonathan submitted, noting that such judgements were capable of destabilising the democratic dispensation in the country. According to him, empowering Ward Chairmen of political parties to suspend their National Chairmen is against the natural course of justice as it is empowering a subordinate to remove his/her superior from office. “You cannot tell me that the head of a department can expel the vice chancellor. “Since that judgement was given, it has created all forms of instability. The PDP is in crisis today because of that judgement. The APC also faced the same problem at a time. “Look at how other nations work; I have never seen where the sub-unit disciplines the principal. “I am therefore pleading with the Supreme Court to review that judgement because it had turned the cone upside down,” ex-President Jonathan added. He made the observations shortly after he was brought to the podium by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was originally named the Chairman of the occasion, but however, while proceeding to the podium to make his remarks, took Jonathan along with him, and announced him as the co-chairman of the event.
