IMMORTALIZE HUMPHREY NWOSU, EX-NEC CHAIRMAN – HOUSE OF REPS

The House of Representatives underscored on Tuesday the need for President Bola Tinubu’s administration to immortalise the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who returned the late M. K. O. Abiola as the winner of the famous June 12, 1993 presidential election.

The resolution was passed as a sequel to the adoption of a motion jointly sponsored by Hon. Peter Ifeanyi Uzokwe and Hon. Nnabuife Chinwe Clara.

In his lead debate, Hon. Uzokwe observed that Professor Nwosu was appointed the National Electoral Commission (NEC) Chairman from 1989 to 1993 by the Military President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida.

“The House is cognizant of various efforts made by the previous administrations to immortalise those who fought for democracy, of which we are all beneficiaries.

“The House also notes that an edifice (the Abuja Stadium) was named after the winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, Moshood K.O. Abiola, by His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR).

“The House further notes that His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) demonstrated an honest remorsefulness of the injustice of June 12, 1993, by changing Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12, which was celebrated with all sense of pride in 2024 by His Excellency Ahmed Bola Tinubu GCFR, who was part of the struggle of June 12, 1993.

“The House is worried about the continued neglect of Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who put his life on the line to see that justice was not only done but seen to be done.

“The House is concerned that the National Anthem was changed, and we all pray to God to help us build a nation where no man is oppressed, yet Prof. Humphrey Nwosu is still not celebrated while he is alive.

“The House is aware of many edifices were named after our Heroes past, like Louis Edet house for Police, Michael Imodu for Labour, Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Murtala Muhammed Airport and M.K.O Abiola Stadium, etc.

“The House is disturbed that not even a road is named after this hero of our democracy to date.”

To this end, the House urged the Federal Government to immortalise Professor Humphrey Nwosu when he is still alive by conferring on him a national honour. The lawmakers also urged the present administration to name the INEC headquarters after him and invite him to every Democracy Day celebration.

OPPOSITION COALITION REJECTS PDP, LP PLOTS MASSIVE MOVIE TO SDP With the major opposition parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), struggling with internal conflicts, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has emerged as a potential leader of the much-anticipated coalition ahead of the 2027 elections. This development follows the recent defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the SDP. El-Rufai, one of APC’s founding members, made the switch shortly after a closed-door meeting with former Osun State Governor and former Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, as well as Pastor Tunde Bakare, who previously ran as a presidential candidate alongside former President Muhammadu Buhari. Positioning himself as a central figure in the opposition coalition, El-Rufai also met with Buhari in Kaduna last week, reportedly informing him of his defection plans. Other notable figures mentioned in discussions about the coalition include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Chibuike Amaechi, and former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami. The coalition’s primary objective is to prevent President Bola Tinubu from securing a second term in the 2027 election. Sources revealed that El-Rufai’s move to the SDP was a strategic step to gauge the ruling party’s response, with other opposition figures expected to follow suit. A political insider, speaking anonymously, indicated that beyond the publicly known politicians, El-Rufai aims “to woo members of the CPC camp who have been sidelined within the APC.” The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) was originally formed by Buhari in preparation for his unsuccessful 2011 presidential bid before merging with Bola Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) ahead of the 2015 elections, which ultimately led to Buhari’s victory. Despite the coalition discussions, Atiku Abubakar remains hesitant about leaving the PDP, under which he contested the presidency in 2019 and 2023. While he has been vocal about forming an opposition alliance to challenge the APC, he recently denied claims that he had left the PDP, reaffirming his commitment to the party. Similarly, former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has refuted reports of his departure from the APC, stating in a brief statement that he remains a dedicated founding member of the party. El-Rufai, who has had a strained relationship with his successor, Governor Uba Sani, previously hinted at leaving the APC during an interview on Arise TV, suggesting that the party had moved away from him. His ongoing engagements with SDP leaders since 2023 fueled speculation about his possible defection, particularly after his ministerial nomination by President Tinubu was rejected by the Senate—a decision El-Rufai has attributed to Tinubu. The growing opposition coalition has led to speculation about a possible El-Rufai and Peter Obi joint presidential ticket in 2027, reportedly backed by some PDP governors. However, the PDP Governors Forum recently dismissed such claims. It has also been reported that the SDP was chosen for its relative stability, making it a viable alternative for opposition forces. In the wake of the 2015 PDP crisis, some party leaders had considered shifting to the SDP if the faction led by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff had prevailed over Senator Ahmed Makarfi’s group. Similarly, during the APC primaries for the 2023 election, some of Tinubu’s allies viewed the SDP as a fallback option if he was denied the APC ticket. PDP and LP Struggling with Internal TurmoilWith the 2027 elections approaching, both the PDP and Labour Party are still grappling with internal conflicts that have led to significant defections. The PDP’s internal crisis, which predates the 2023 elections, has deepened, with ongoing power struggles between the G-5 PDP faction, led by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, and the pro-Atiku group. MASS EXODUS HITS KADUNA APC AFTER EL-RUFAI’S EXIT

MASS EXODUS HITS KADUNA APC AFTER EL-RUFAI’S EXIT Mass exodus has hit the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kaduna State following the resignation of the immediately past governor, Naira El-Rufai from the party. Several resignation letters sighted by DAILY POST on Monday showed that party faithful believed to be supporters of El-Rufai are leaving the ruling party in droves. This comes hours after El-Rufai made it public that he has defected to the Social Democratic Party, SDP. In the same manner, former commissioners under El-Rufai tendered their resignations from the party. Former Commissioner for Local Government, Ja’afaru Ibrahim Sani and Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Hafsat Mohammed Baba have all submitted their resignation letters to the party’s respective wards chairmen on Monday. The resignation of Sani reads in parts, “With the hatred and disdain shown to us by the leadership of the party we worked hard to nurture, it has become compelling to seek another platform in our desire to bring development and prosperity to our dear people. “Consequently, after a deep retrospection, re-evaluation, and consultation with key stakeholders in Anchau, Kubau LGA, and Kaduna State, I write to inform you of my decision to withdraw my membership from the APC with immediate effect. “As I move on, I remain grateful to you and to all members of the APC, as well as the electorates in the Ward, Kubau Local Government Area, and the State for the support rendered to me as Chairman of the APC Stakeholders, Kubau LGA. I recall with a feeling of fulfillment the unprecedented electoral victories the party recorded in previous general elections in the ward and the local government area. The historic feat will remain indelible in the history of party politics in the local government area. “Accept the assurances of my regards at all times. “Enclosed herewith is my temporary membership registration card for your Ja’afaru Ibrahim Sani necessary action”. Also, the letter from Hafsat Baba partly reads: “The Chairman may note that I came into the negotiations to form the APC as the incumbent, and hence, legacy National Woman Leader of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria. We joined the merger to entrench democratic order and justice to the political space in the country which was in dire need of a new political and governing direction. “However, the party has lost its sense of direction and purpose and has deviated from its founding principles of justice, peace and unity. As an ardent proponent and follower of these principles, continued association with the party as it is currently constituted is against my principles (Aqida). “Further actions and political decisions will follow as myself and like-minds deem appropriate and as may keep us on our founding – and still extant- principles of Justice and Political order”. However, reacting, Kaduna APC said it was not losing sleep over El-Rufai’s defection.
