ENUGU RANGERS YET TO RECEIVE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP PRIZE MONEY – OWUMI

The Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Davidson Owumi, has confirmed that Enugu Rangers have not received their prize money.

Enugu Rangers emerged winners of the 2023-2024 NPFL campaign on matchday 37, a week to the end of the season following their home victory over Bendel Insurance.

They beat Gombe United 1-2 away from home to finish the campaign with 70 points in 38 games.

During the trophy presentation ceremony, the Enugu-based side received a mock cheque of 150 million as the prize money for winning the league on Sunday, June 23.

In an interview with veteran journalist, Mitchell Obi on Sports Salsa, Davidson Owumi admitted that the prize money has not gotten to the league winners.

Owumi added that the league body is working on releasing the money to the club within seven days in line with its regulations.

He also added that the league body was aiming to make the payment during the FA Cup final between Abia Warriors and El-Kanemi Warriors in Lagos on Saturday, June 30, 2024.

He said, “They have been given the mock cheque and they should receive their prize money cheque in the next few days, hopefully they will get it if they come for the 2024 President’s Federation Cup this weekend because it ought not to be more than seven working days after they win the league.”

In his assessment of the just concluded 2023-2024 NPFL season, Owumi added: “The NFF put up a good selection of people to be in the NPFL board and the clubs too were also cooperative, while the press was there too.

“It was a win-win situation for the entire sectors involved in the league. We could not have done anything without the fans. It is just the beginning of a very long journey.”

Meanwhile, the 2024-2025 NPFL season will commence on August 31, 2024.

But Davidson Owumi said though the fixtures and the start date for the forthcoming league were ready, they are tentative until they are approved by the Club Owners and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) during the league body’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

“From the NPFL internal workings, we already have that one in place, but the league board also need to call the Congress of Nigeria Clubs for them to agree”, Owumi said.“It is the only thing left to be done because the fixtures, dates and other things are ready. But we cannot say that because the Congress of Clubs need to ratify it so that we do not jump the gun.”

MISS UNIVERSE FIRST RUNNER UP, CHIDINMA ADETSHINA, THANKS NIGERIANS: AT MY LOWEST, YOU PICKED ME UP Chidimma Adetshina, Nigeria’s representative at the 73rd Miss Universe competition, has expressed deep gratitude to Nigerians and Africans for their support, which contributed to her historic achievement at Miss Universe 2024. During the final moments of the prestigious event at Arena CDMX in Mexico City on Sunday morning, a thrilling showdown unfolded between Adetshina and Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, as the two women vied for the coveted crown. In the end, Miss Denmark, Theilvig, claimed the title, succeeding Miss Universe 2023, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua. Following the competition, Adetshina took to Instagram to share her appreciation. The beauty queen recalled how Nigerians supported her during her lowest, and how Africa as a continent taught her the power of unity in the pursuit of success. She wrote, “To Nigeria: THANK YOU is not enough for all the support you’ve shown. You picked me up when I was at my lowest. I’ve never opened up much but I was ready to give up on my life but you became my strength. On days I never wanted to fight you gave me the strength to fight. I’m so grateful for each and everyone for walking this journey with me. She also addressed the African continent, saying, “To Africa: thank you for showing your love and support. As much as I represent Nigeria, Africa fought for me. My voice, my story touched many and brought us together. This journey has taught me the power of Unity. I want us to live in a society where we can all accept and celebrate one another.” Chidimma Adetshina concluded by emphasising that this moment marks the beginning of her journey, not its end.

CHIDINMA ADETSHINA FIRST RUNNER UP AT MISS UNIVERSE CONTEST

NIGERIA’S CHIDINMA ADETSHINA FIRST RUNNER UP AT MISS UNIVERSE CONTEST Chidimma Adetshina, representing Nigeria, has finished as the first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe competition. The event took place in Mexico. The finale, held in the early hours of Sunday, was a tense and exciting moment as Chidimma stood alongside Denmark’s representative. Both contestants held their breath as they waited for the winner to be announced. In the end, Denmark claimed the crown. “The final two! Nigeria and Denmark, two incredible women, one unforgettable moment,” the organisers said on Instagram before the announcement of the winner. This year’s Miss Universe was one of the most competitive in recent memory. Contestants showcased not only their beauty but also their intelligence, talents, and cultural pride. The organisers openly admitted to it. Chidimma’s journey to the Miss Universe stage was one without no controversy. Earlier this year, she faced criticism and xenophobic attacks while participating in the Miss South Africa competition. Many questioned her eligibility due to her mixed heritage—born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother with Mozambican roots. The hostility forced Chidimma to withdraw from the Miss South Africa contest. She eventually accepted an invitation to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant. In August, Chidimma competed at the event in Lagos and came out victorious.
