Contributing, Senator Okey Ezea representing Enugu North Senatorial District, on Tuesday, extended his condolences to the community and urged all the security agencies to fish out the marauders. “Just when we thought that killings of our people at Uzo-Uwani LGA of Enugu State had stopped, non-state actors, on Sunday, emerged from the bush to murder several defenceless men, women and children at Adani. SOUTH EAST GOVERNORS PARTNERS FG ON RAIL TRANSPORTATION, POWER, INFRASTRUCTURE

SOUTH EAST GOVERNORS’ FORUM PARTNERS FG ON RAIL TRANSPORTATION, POWER, INFRASTRUCTURE The South East Governors’ Forum (SEGOF) has said it was partnering with the Federal Government and other international organisations to improve power supply and enhance rail transportation and other infrastructure development in the region. Its Director General, Uche Ekwunife, said the forum has recorded massive landmark progress in ensuring all round development in the zone under the incumbent governors. Ekwunife said proposals were being processed, harmonised, analysed and waiting for convenient time for the governors to implement. “The governors are addressing the region’s infrastructure gap through strategic investments and partnership. The rehabilitation of the eastern rail line by the Federal Government through the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is a major milestone. “Rehabilitation of the rail is ongoing with the first phase from Port Harcourt to Aba which is now set for commissioning this month. The second phase, extending from Aba to Enugu, is also underway. Knowing the concerns of Ndi-Igbo regarding a narrow-gauge system instead of a standard gauge, the South East Governors’ Forum is in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation and the NRC to seek interventions in that regard,” she said The SEGOF boss also disclosed feasibility study for the standard gauge rail has been carried out, adding that the forum was talking with the Federal Government on the need for a standard gauge rail line in the region. Ekwunife said the forum was engaging relevant bodies to ensure steady power supply in the zone to drive production. “In understating the importance of reliable power supply for economic development, the South East governors in partnership with the Federal Government have commissioned the Light Up Nigeria project. This initiative is a measure taken by the governors in the region to boost power supply while leveraging on the transfer of electricity from the exclusive list to the concurrent list. “The Light Up Initiative, an intervention programme by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) in collaboration with Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), aims at providing steady and reliable power supply to industrial and business clusters in the South East,” Ekwunife said. She said the forum is seriously pursuing sponsorship of a uniform legislation through state assemblies on power, leveraging on the removal of power from the exclusive list to the concurrent list. “This legislation aims to create a seamless and investor-friendly environment, eliminating encumbrances and hurdles while transacting business with the states in the region. Using the Enugu Electricity legislation as a model, the governors were working hard to make ease of doing business sacrosanct so that investors in the power sector can freely transact business with the entire region without any legal bottlenecks or impediments,” she said. She, however, lamented the dwindling economic activities in the zone and blamed it on the lack of apprenticeship and disclosed the forum is working on a regional apprenticeship system to engage the youths in business mentorship again.

WE DON’T WANT PHILIP SHUAIBU IN OUR PARTY – EDO APC

WE DON’T WANT PHILIP SHAIBU IN OUR PARTY – EDO APC A day after his impeachment as deputy governor of Edo State, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Etsako West Local Government Area, have protested alleged plans to re-admit Philip Shaibu, into the party. The protesters, drawn from the 12 wards of the local government, took their protest to the party secretariat, where they submitted their petition against the alleged plan to re-admit the former deputy governor. Mr. Yakubu Musa, while presenting a communiqué on behalf of the APC stakeholders said Shaibu’s exit from APC in 2020 brought peace and tranquility in the party. He argued that his readmittance into the party would further bring rancour and disunity in the party. “We are protesting over an attempt by the impeached deputy governor Philip Shaibu to jump the boat and defect to APC. The attempt is viewed seriously by members of APC as a calculated plan by Philip Shaibu to bring rancour, disharmony and unprecedented crisis into APC,” Musa said. He appealed to the National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Ganduje, Senator Adams Oshiomhole and the State Acting Chairman, Jaret Tenebe, not to admit the impeached deputy governor into APC, saying that he has no political vote to add to APC. “It is on record that Philip Shaibu has not won any election since he left APC to PDP. Philip Shaibu does not possess any electoral value that could warrant his readmittance into our great party.“We call on our national leaders to hear our voice and help us keep the peace we currently enjoy as APC in Edo State. Any attempt to enroll Philip Shaibu into APC is a direct invitation to crisis, fragmentation, disaffection, disenchanting and disintegration”, Musa declared.

FRESH CRISIS THREATENS PDP AHEAD OF CRUCIAL NEC MEETING

FRESH CRISIS THREATENS PDP AHEAD OF CRUCIAL NEC MEETING A few days to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting slated for April 18,2024, a fresh crisis is brewing in the party. This is coming at a time when the NEC’s capacity to take decisive actions against members involved in anti-party activities is under question. Just a few days ago, a coalition of PDP federal lawmakers called for the resignation of the party’s acting national chairman, Umar Iliya Damagun, over alleged anti-party activities. The lawmakers were led by Hon Ikenga UgoChinyere, a member of the House of Representatives. Among other things, they questioned the silence of the party leadership over the political situation in Rivers State, leading to the intervention by President Bola Tinubu. The lawmakers also claimed they were speaking on behalf of at least 60 lawmakers in the opposition lawmakers’ coalition in the National Assembly. They said the local government leadership changes of the party were planned by Damagum, who they alleged has drafted members of the APC as caretaker committee members of the PDP in some states. According to the lawmakers, PDP under Damagum has been crumbling, losing elections and facing court cases. “Not only did Damagun hold tight to the seat for well over a year now, he has abdicated every responsibility of the office of the Chairman of PDP and is very comfortable serving APC interests,” the lawmakers stated. “There had been agreement of a broad spectrum of the party leadership when it became clear that Damagum was not interested in conducting elections but to appoint Caretaker committees in at least 19 states where the tenures of the State and local government leaders were expiring to extend the tenures of these officials by three months. “This decision which was made to cover every state was the wisdom that restrained Damagum from announcing a wholesale list of a majority of Caretaker Committees populated by APC agents masquerading as PDP members. “However, despite that decision to retain everybody, Mr. Damagun went ahead and received a list of APC agents and announced them as members and leaders of the PDP Local Government Caretaker Committees wholly in Rivers State and partially in at least 10 other states. This is a direct attempt to kill the PDP and ensure it goes into extinction. “To make issues clearer, we are speaking on behalf of at least 60 lawmakers in the opposition lawmakers’ coalition in the National Assembly. We all won our elections without any form of help or support from the party hierarchy. It has become clearer to us that this scenario was foisted so that as many of us as possible will fail the elections. Damagum never really wanted us to win. “Voices have risen from the National Assembly to speak out and stop you. You have a chance to resign immediately, leave or be embarrassed out of the party. At least 60 of us in the PDP in the National Assembly will sever all relations with the Damagun leadership until he leaves office. “At the scheduled National Executive Committee meeting, if Damagun by any manoeuvring however conjectured remains in office with the help of his APC friends at the end of the day, the party is now heading to the final slaughter shed,” the lawmakers said in a statement on Monday. The nation’s main opposition party has seen its fortunes dwindle since after the 2015 general elections when it lost the presidential seat to the then newly formed All Progressives Congress, APC. The recent being the loss of the 2023 general elections, coupled with internal rivalries and divisions within the party. Many now share the view that the PDP seems to be in a dilemma over what to do…

IT’S TIME TO RESTRUCTURE NIGERIA – OBASANJO

IT’S TIME TO RESTRUCTURE NIGERIA — OBASANJO FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo has thrown his weight behind the need to restructure Nigeria, warning that the preponderance of wrong systems of administration is bad for the governance of any country. Obasanjo spoke in Enugu during the public presentation of the book ‘In Brotherhood We Stand: A Roadmap for the Rebirth of a Fragmented Nation’, written by Engr. Chris Okoye. The event was held at the Immanuel Gardens, Independence Layout in Enugu. The former President, who was the chairman of the occasion, lamented that Nigeria had moved from one bad governance to another. His words: “The clarion call in Nigeria today is one for restructuring and a reassessment of the terms of our union as a nation. “No matter how economically viable a nation is, bad governance and a wrong system of administration can bring it down as there is a direct correlation between economic and political reforms. “Our historical experience at constitution making and political reform show that we may have some structural defects that require adjustment so as not to continue to constrain the deepening, widening and consolidation of democratic values and practices. “Indeed, some of the contradictions and challenges bequeathed by the colonial administration have continued to pose problems for us to this day. “As things stand therefore, our constitution making efforts must go down the grassroots to deal with the issues of inclusion, popular participation, ownership, and legitimacy.” Challenges The former President, who spoke through a live video link at the occasion, lamented that: “Nigeria, in one word, has moved from bad governance to another. “In the process, we tried to adjust to the weaknesses of the system and equally adapted to doing without some of those fundamentals that really ought to drive the political process. “Some issues that have emerged include, but are not limited to, the challenge of constitutionalism and constitutional reform; the opportunity to bring all stakeholders together to discuss the preferred political path for the nation; the challenge of building new, accountable, responsive and focused leadership; and how to build, operate and sustain real political liberties, social justice, rights and obligations; electoral reforms that ensure credibility and respectability of elections; relations between tiers of government; performance of government and how to ensure truly democratic governance for all. “In all of these, the central challenge is still how to strengthen the social contract between the custodians of state power and the governed.” While he stressed the need for unity, cohesion and equity, the former President all hands must be on deck to move Nigeria forward. Obasanjo said: “What we want in Nigeria today is unity, cohesion, equity, togetherness and collective commitment to our progress and to the Nigeria project. “We want to move forward, look forward, think about the past to help the present and the future and work for a stronger and more united Nigeria. “It is unhelpful to devote time and energy to unrealistic, even unpatriotic strategies for precipitating crises, conflicts, deadlock and disintegration. In a democracy, there must be checks and balances and there must be effective watchdogs.” Commenting on the book, Obasanjo said: “This book is of great interest to me as a person because it is a direct fallout from the National Political Reform Conference which my administration organised in 2005. “And to us as a nation, because the content of the book is a most needed panacea for many of the ills plaguing our nation today.” Roll call Dignitaries present at the book launch included former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi; former President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ken Nnamani; former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim. Also present were Senator Victor Umeh; former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral…

STOP DIGGING BOREHOLES IN THE NORTH, AREWA GROUP TELLS PETER OBI

STOP DIGGING BOREHOLES IN THE NORTH, AREWA GROUP TELLS PETER OBI An Arewa group has reportedly called on Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, to cease the digging of boreholes in the Northern regions of Nigeria. This request comes amidst discussions on social media platforms, where prominent figures like Aisha Yesufu have commented on the situation. The Arewa group’s stance is that such initiatives should not be necessary given the region’s significant representation in the democratic process. The group’s appeal suggests a sense of embarrassment over the existence of communities within the North that still lack basic amenities like clean water, despite the region’s political influence. Aisha Yesufu, a well-known activist, took to Twitter to express her views on the matter. She criticized the Arewa group for their position, urging them to confront the reality of poverty in the region rather than opposing well-intentioned efforts to alleviate it. Yesufu’s tweet implied that the group should be ashamed of the persistent underdevelopment and encouraged a break from the acceptance of poverty. The conversation around this issue highlights the ongoing challenges faced by many communities in Nigeria regarding access to clean water and basic infrastructure. It also raises questions about the responsibilities of elected representatives and the effectiveness of governance in addressing the needs of the populace. Peter Obi’s actions, which include the provision of boreholes, are seen by some as a commendable effort to directly address these challenges. However, the Arewa group’s request indicates a complex interplay between politics, development, and the expectations of community support.

WE REGRET VOTING TINUBU IN 2023 – NORTHERN ELDERS

WE REGRET VOTING TINUBU IN 2023 – NORTHERN ELDERS The Northern Elders Forum has registered the region’s regret for pitching a tent with President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 general elections. It said the mistake of voting for the then-candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taught the North a lesson. The forum recently came hard on the President when it lamented the growing insecurity across the country. The elders said the recent abduction of Kuriga school children in Kaduna indicated that the current administration “has failed to protect Nigerians just a few months in office.” In a chat, spokesperson for the group, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, said going forward, the region will now prioritise unity and consensus in selecting a candidate for the highest office in the land. Recall that in the 2023 general elections, Tinubu polled 8,794,726 total votes to be declared President. North West, North East and North Central gave the President a combined ballot of 5.4 million. Responding to a question on the recent visit and donation by former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi to northern communities, Suleiman stated “The North made a mistake in voting Bola Tinubu to the presidency in 2023, and it is unlikely that they will repeat the same error in the future. “They have learned from their past misstep and will strive to select a candidate, who can unite the country and govern in the best interests of all Nigerians. “Moving forward, the North will be more cautious in selecting a candidate for the presidency.“They will prioritise someone, who is seen as more inclusive, less controversial and more aligned with the interests of all regions of the country. The mistake of supporting Tinubu in 2023 has taught them the importance of unity and consensus in selecting a candidate for the highest office in the land.”

CATHOLIC CHURCH KICKS AGAINST SURROGACY, TRANSGENDER, ADVOCATES RESPECT FOR GAY PEOPLE

CATHOLIC CHURCH KICKS AGAINST SURROGACY, TRANSGENDER; ADVOCATES RESPECT FOR GAY PEOPLE The Vatican has described the belief in gender fluidity as “a concession to the age-old temptation to make oneself God,” according to the Guardian UK. The Vatican said this in an updated declaration of what the Catholic Church regards as threats to human dignity. The new Dignitas infinita (Infinite Dignity) declaration released by the Vatican’s doctrinal office on Monday after five years in the making reiterates Pope Francis’s previous criticism of what he has called an “ugly ideology of our time.” “Desiring a personal self-determination, as gender theory prescribes, apart from this fundamental truth that human life is a gift, amounts to a concession to the age-old temptation to make oneself God, entering into competition with the true God of love revealed to us in the gospel,” the 20-page document says. Reiterating opposition to gender reassignment surgery, it adds: “It follows that any sex-change intervention, as a rule, risks threatening the unique dignity the person has received from the moment of conception.” The Holy See distinguished between these sorts of surgeries and procedures to resolve “genital abnormalities” that are present at birth or develop later. It said those abnormalities could be treated with the help of healthcare professionals. The Vatican said Pope Francis had approved the document, which also reaffirms its condemnation of surrogacy, saying the practice represents “a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child.” “A child is always a gift and never the basis of a commercial contract,” the document says. “Every human life, beginning with that of the unborn child in its mother’s womb, cannot be suppressed, nor become an object of commodity.”The document says gay people should be respected and denounces the fact that “in some places, not a few people are imprisoned, tortured, and even deprived of the good of life solely because of their sexualorientation.”
