OUTAGES: SOUTH EAST CONSUMERS CALL FOR ONE-MONTH BOYCOTT OF EEDC Electricity consumers in the South-East geo-political zone of the country have threatened a one-month warning boycott to “remain in darkness,” to protest against incessant power outages, outrageous and estimated billings, extortions, as well as non-provision of pre-paid meters to consumers across the region. Findings showed that both commercial and economic activities in the area have largely been paralysed due to incessant power outages across the region, which has therefore affected most shop owners and small scale enterprises, who now depend on running their businesses on diesel, while some who could not afford the cost of diesel have closed down their shops/businesses “temporarily,” pending when power situation improves. This was just as residents across the region are also lamenting what they called “outrageous and irritative estimated electricity billing” in the midst of power outage from Enugu Electricity Distribution Company. EEDC distributes electricity to South-East states such as Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi. Their position to embark on a one-month warning boycott was made known after a stakeholders’ meeting held simultaneously across the five states of the region on April 4. The meeting was convened under the aegis of South-East Electricity Consumers Association. Speaking through a communiqué issued at the end of the meetings, SEECA Chairman and Secretary, Rev. Okechukwu Obioha, JP, and Mr Ogubuike Ibeagi resectively, said SEECA aimed to stand in the gap to interface between the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, Discos and electricity consumers, with a view to strengthening the operations of the Discos to deliver their contractual responsibility to the people of the region. Obioha and Ibeagi explained that during the “warning strike,” which would be declared after a stakeholders meeting in May, everybody will be in “total darkness” and those on prepaid meters will not recharge, lamenting that the NERC/EEDC have kept the people not only in “epileptic or kwashiorkor-ridden electricity supply for far too long, but in darkness presently.” They explained that the aim of the exercise and engagement was to assist NERC to monitor and implement their regulations and responsibility towards the Discos and to consumers, as well as to provide a collective voice in advocating for the rights of the consumers, to enjoy the full benefits of accessing electricity without let or hinder. SEECA also rejected the 300 per cent increase in electricity tariff announced by the Federal Government, and strongly requested that prepaid meters be installed in every household and businesses before the implementation. The communiqué further read, “From this day, April 4, 2024, no consumer of electricity under the DisCo, EEDC, should pay for prepaid meter/s. Meter/s is the property of EEDC and therefore by law must be issued free to consumers. “No individual/s or community/ies should buy or provide transformers for their electricity consumption. If that is very unavoidable, the transformer procurement should be done after negotiations and MoUs with the EEDC or Geometrics. Its president, Chief Segun Amode, made the assertion in Abuja, in a reaction to Obaseki’s choice of Godwins as his deputy after the impeachment of Philip Shaibu from Etsako West local government area. Godwins, his successor hails from Akoko Edo local government area, which is described as one of the largest councils in Nigeria. But Amode declared that the people of Akoko-Edo would not celebrate the appointment of Godwins as deputy governor because Obaseki was only using it to seek votes from Akoko-Edo in the September 2024 governorship election. Amode further stated that, “Obaseki may have been tired of using roads to deceive Akoko-Edo people each election season. He said, “In every election period, the governor will award our roads and bring bulldozers to the site.” “After the elections, we will not see the bulldozers again until after four years. Now he is using another style by appointing our son for a five-month tenure as Deputy Governor.” “He knows our people are waiting for him to ask about the roads that he awarded eight years and four years ago. Our schools do not have teachers as we speak. Many of us are the ones employing and paying teachers in our schools in Akoko-Edo just to sustain the education of our children. He further stated that Omobayo will only be deputy governor until November this year which will not bring anything to Akoko-Edo or Edo north. “Since Governor Obaseki was always complaining that the APC-led federal government was not cooperating with him to repair our roads, we have made our minds to align with the central government so that our roads and other infrastructure can reach us,” he stated. The Edo State House of Assembly on Monday impeached Shaibu as deputy governor of the state. Obaseki immediately sworn in Mr. Omobayo Godwins to replace Philip Shuaibu.Godwins was a candidate for the House of Representatives during the 2023 general elections under the Labour Party, which he lost.

Phillip Shaibu, sacked Deputy Governor of Edo State, became the 17th to be removed from office since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. For Shaibu, it was a long trek to freedom and a long-drawn battle to remain afloat in Edo’s political space. Over the years, some Deputy Governors have been impeached for political reasons that somehow amount to gross misconduct. Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, provides for the removal of governor or Deputy Governor from office through the process of impeachment. The process consists of a written allegation of gross misconduct against the accused person who has a right to defend himself. If his defence succeeds, he is expected to be left off the hook; if not, he is removed from office. The said section 188 spells out in detail, the procedures and steps to be taken to consummate the process. In a letter signed by her counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Edu demanded $50 million compensation from the media organization. The letter, addressed to BBC’s Abuja and London offices, claimed that the BBC had reported false information regarding the ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, alleging that N30 billion was recovered from the suspended minister. The lawyer stated that the concerned publication had caused immeasurable reputational damage, psychological trauma and anguish to Edu. “Our client has suffered immeasurable reputational damage, psychological trauma and anguish as a direct consequence of the publication and dissemination of the article,” the letter read. The letter further criticized the BBC for its article, stating that it suggested guilt on Edu’s part without allowing for the presumption of innocence. It accused the BBC of breaching journalistic fairness and due process by not providing Edu with an opportunity to respond to the allegations before publishing the article. Parts of the letter read, “First and foremost, the language used in describing our client’s purported involvement in the alleged corruption case suggests guilt without allowing for the presumption of innocence, which is fundamental in any fair and unbiased reporting. “The reckless manner in which the article was crafted, without providing our client with the opportunity to respond to the allegations before its wide publication, is a clear breach of journalistic fairness and due process and demonstrates a complete disregard for journalistic integrity and professionalism. “The headline, content, and tone of the article imply guilt on the part of our client, without any concrete evidence to substantiate such claims. “This is a blatant attempt to tarnish our client’s reputation and undermine her credibility which she has earned over the course of her distinguished career in both private and public life. “For the avoidance of doubt, our client has neither been indicted nor found culpable of any act of financial impropriety in relation to her stewardship of the Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Ministry in Nigeria. “It is also pertinent to emphasize that neither N30 billion nor any amount whatsoever has been traced to or recovered from our client’s bank accounts nor has any proceeds of crime been traced or recovered from her to warrant the scurrilous article under reference. “Suffice it to say that in the aftermath of the publication of this scandalous article (which the BBC caused to be disseminated to millions of persons across the globe), our client has been inundated by calls and messages from friends, associates expressing their shock and consternation. “Our client has suffered immeasurable reputational damage, psychological trauma and anguish as a direct consequence of the publication and dissemination of the article.”
