NLC PRESENTS DEMANDS TO FG AHEAD OF MAY DAY

NLC PRESENTS DEMANDS TO FG AHEAD OF MAY DAY The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has outlined its demands ahead of the May 1st, 2024 workers’ day celebrations. Among the demands presented to the federal and state governments is the establishment of state and local government police. The demands come under the theme of ‘Social Justice and Decent Work for All,’ reflecting the NLC’s focus on addressing key issues affecting workers’ welfare and rights. The seven demands include improved labour-government industrial relations, full implementation of the minimum wage across all sectors, settlement of pension arrears, and the creation of compressed natural gas conversion centers in all senatorial districts. Furthermore, the NLC calls for the fixing of Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries, granting local government autonomy, and providing infrastructure support schemes to all local governments. These demands highlight the NLC’s commitment to advocating for workers’ rights and enhancing socio-economic conditions across Nigeria. Here are their demands. Establishment of state and local government police. Granting of local government autonomy and infrastructure support scheme to all local governments. Improved labour-government industrial relations. Full implementation of the minimum wage across all sectors (700k, yet to be approved) Settlement of pension arrears. Establishment of compressed natural gas conversion centers. Fixing of Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries. NLC’s demands and the naira’s decline underscore the urgent need for holistic approaches to address socio-economic challenges and ensure the well-being of Nigerians, particularly workers. As the nation commemorates the May 1st workers’ day, it is essential for policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize ways that enhance social justice, promote decent work, and help boost the economy.

BANDITS CELEBRATE SALLAH IN VIRAL VIDEO, NIGERIANS REACT

BANDITS CELEBRATE SALLAH IN VIRAL VIDEO, NIGERIANS REACT Nigerians and the rest of the world were taken aback when a video of thousands of bandits celebrating Sallah in Zamfara State surfaced on social media. The development, many say, is a slap on Nigeria’s security architecture. The video, which was disclosed by a counter insurgency analysts and security expert focused on Lake Chad region, Zaga Zula Mahama, on Thursday, April 18, has been generating reactions from Nigerians. The bandits in their thousands were shown partaking in the Sallah festivities. Nigerians have paid heavily in various forms, following the activities of the bandits, particularly in the North West and North Central, where they have made life a living hell for the people. Nigerians in their hundreds of thousands have been kidnapped in the past by the bandits and ransom running into millions paid to secure their release. Many who could not afford the outrageous ransom which they demand from most often have been brutally killed. Many others have died out of torture in their hands or as a result of inclement weather in the forests and thick bushes where the bandits had always kept them. In some states, like Katsina, Zamfara and Niger, some local government areas are comfortably under the control of the bandits, where they levy and collect taxes from the people without fear of any consequences. Although the military kept assuring Nigerians that they were on top of the situation, the bandits appear unperturbed as they keep dishing pain, sorrow and death on a monthly basis. The situation had become so disturbing that many people now question the authenticity of the information the military has been feeding Nigerians with, as it affects the counter insurgency war. Nigerians have been told several times that scores of the bandits have been neutralised at different times in different locations and states including Zamfara, which is regarded as their headquarters. But, with the number seen on the video, many are asking if the information that the military has been feeding Nigerians with is anything to go by. Some people are also saying that what the bandits wanted to prove with the viral video was simply to show that they have the backing of some powerful individuals in the society. One of those who are sceptical about the information from the military authorities regarding their onslaught on the bandits is the president of the Middle Belt Forum, MBF, Dr. Pogu Bitrus. He wondered why there are still thousands of the bandits out there despite assurances from the military that they are being dealt with. Commenting on the viral video, Bitrus said the bandits wanted to showcase their religion. He said, “The bandits just want to show that they are Muslims, whether or not we accept is immaterial. “It also shows that up till now, no matter what we have been told that the military have done with regard to decimating them, there are still a lot of them out there who can cause havoc in this country.” He accused some people of paying lip service to the unity of the country, because according to him, if they wanted the country to be one as they would want people to believe, they would not be supporting the activities of the bandits. He stressed that the only way to solve the problem of banditry in Nigeria was to restructure the country so that each state or geo-political region would be able to provide adequate security for her people. “Sentiments apart, we are people who believe in one Nigeria. But the reality is that there are people who don’t believe in one Nigeria. “If they do, they will not do what they are doing. We need to do what is…

ROBOT PRIEST ‘FATHER JUSTIN’ EXCOMMUNICATED BY CATHOLIC CHURCH

ROBOT PRIEST, ‘FATHER JUSTIN”, EXCOMMUNICATED BY CATHOLIC CHURCH A robot priest created by artificial intelligence was defrocked after just one day when parishioners kicked against it. The virtual priest named “Father Justin” was set up by a US religious network Catholic Answers to tend to the needs of Catholics online. But within 24 hours the computerised clergyman was excommunicated as he left churchgoers upset. President of Catholic Answers, Christopher Check, said they have now made “Father Justin” to become a regular robot called “just Justin.” He admitted the move had been made after getting an earful from followers. Mr Check stated: “Recently, my colleagues and I at Catholic Answers have received a good deal of helpful feedback concerning another new technology – our AI app ‘Fr. Justin.’ “Prevalent is criticism of the representation of the AI character as a priest.” When the app was launched, Catholic Answers’ Chris Costello said: “We are confident our users will not mistake the AI for a human.” “We won’t say he’s been laicized, because he never was a real priest!” Catholic Answers said in a written statement to the National Catholic Register on Wednesday, April 24. Mr Check told the publication: “We chose the character to convey a quality of knowledge and authority, and also as a sign of the respect that all of us at Catholic Answers hold for our clergy. Many people, however, have voiced concerns about this choice. “We hear these concerns; and we do not want the character to distract from the important purpose of the application, which is to provide sound answers to questions about the Catholic faith in an innovative way that makes good use of the benefits of ‘artificial intelligence.’” Catholic Answer said it would carry on looking into and tweaking the way it works with artificial intelligence.

IT’S A LIE! 2023 POLL DIDN’T REFLECT NIGERIANS’ WILL – LP, PDP FAULT US REPORT

IT’S A LIE! 2023 POLL DIDN’T REFLECT NIGERIANS’ WILL – LP, PDP FAULT US REPORT The opposition Labour Party, LP, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have expressed shock over how the United States 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices arrived at its conclusion that the 2023 polls reflected the will of Nigerians, despite widespread irregularities. However, the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Presidency hailed the report, but said the party did not need external validation of its victories at the polls. The report published by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour, US Department of State, highlighted human rights practices and violations in different countries, including Nigeria. It said the last general elections in Nigeria reflected the will of the populace, despite widespread irregularities. Picking holes in the conclusion, LP and PDP said they are committed to deepening democracy in Nigeria and averting a one-party state. The report stated that supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, suppressed votes in Igbo-dominated areas during the March 2023 governorship election in Lagos. “National elections were widely reported to have reflected the will of voters, despite technical and logistical difficulties, and some irregularities. “Many independent observers who assessed the results of the presidential, legislative, and state-level elections during the year reflected the will of voters despite reports of voter suppression and vote-buying, campaigning at polling stations, lack of ballot secrecy, violence, and intimidation. “During the March 18 state election in Lagos, All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters reportedly intimidated and suppressed voters in Igbo-dominated areas, which Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, won in the February 25 national election. “Viral videos on social media showed APC supporters in Ojo (LGA in Lagos) threatening to attack ethnic Igbo voters presumed to be pro-Obi. “In Eti-Osa, APC supporters also attacked journalists and, in some cases, shut down voting and prevented non-Yoruba voters from accessing polls. They similarly destroyed property and physically blocked voters in Amuwo-Odofin.“According to videos posted on social media, police officers were present but failed to respond to attacks,’’ the report read. It said there was no evidence that individuals who perpetrated violence in Lagos during the election were arrested or prosecuted. The report also stated that the Nigerian government has not “consistently” implemented anti-corruption laws.It said there was “widespread” corruption across the country, including the judiciary. “In August, President Tinubu appointed former Governor Abubakar Bagudu, the Minister of Budget, despite Bagudu’s widely reported history of helping then-President Sani Abacha steal hundreds of millions of dollars from the government in the 1990s,’’ the report stated. However, the two main opposition political parties, the PDP and the LP, in reaction to the report, restated their commitment to the development of democracy in Nigeria, despite its shortcomings. National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, in a telephone chat with Vanguard said: “I am yet to read the report but one thing we, as a party, can assure Nigerians is that we remain committed to the advancement of democracy in our country.“We are also committed to ensuring that our country does not become a one-party state or slide into dictatorship.” Speaking in a similar vein, his counterpart in the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, said: “With all said and done, we take solace in the fact that the report was fair enough to admit that there were irregularities, including but not limited to vote buying, ballot box snatching, intimidation and physical attacks on our party supporters, especially in Lagos. “The report was magnanimous enough to note that supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, suppressed votes in areas dominated by our supporters during the March 2023 governorship election in Lagos. “To say the outcome of such an election reflects the majority view of Nigerians is left for…

LAGOS WORKERS EARNING N70,000 MINIMUM WAGE SINCE JANUARY – SANWO-OLU

LAGOS WORKERS EARNING N70,000 MINIMUM WAGE SINCE JANUARY – SANWO-OLU Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State said on Thursday that civil servants in the state have been receiving N70,000 minimum wage since January. Sanwo-Olu said his administration has been paying workers an additional N35,000 wage allowance since January. Speaking at a function on Thursday, the governor assured workers that his administration would soon dole out a new minimum wage scheme. He said: “The civil servants and all public officers in Lagos know that since January, we have continued to pay the wage allowance of a minimum of N35,000 over and above what they were earning before. “What this means is that people that are earning a minimum of N35,000 or more before are now earning over N70,000. That is what they have been enjoying since January. “So it is important for people to know that we make these things very clear and that this government has doubled up to ensure that at this difficult time, it has not left the citizens on their own.” Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that his administration will distribute food items to 500,000 households in the state through unions and local governments. Speaking on the ‘Ounje Eko’ Initiative, where food items are sold at discounted prices, Sanwo-Olu said: “We created 59 makeshift markets outside of the regular markets out of our 57 local government and local council development areas and made it Sunday-Sunday market.”‘

ENUGU GOVT GEARS TO REPOSITION ANAMMCO

ENUGU GOVT GEARS TO REPOSITION ANAMMCO The Enugu State Government has stated its desire and preparedness to reposition the old Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company (ANAMMCO), based in Enugu, to upscale its economic relevance in the state. The State Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Mr. Chika Ugwoke, made the pledge after Gov. Peter Mbah took a facility tour of the ANAMMCO vehicle production facilities on Thursday. ANAMMCO was conceived by the Federal Government of Nigeria under the Second National Development Plan (1970–1975). Addressing newsmen, Ugwuoke said the essence of the tour was to have a first-hand assessment of the company’s production and after-sales support capacity. Ugwoke said the governor’s unparalleled passion for infrastructural development for his state made him ever-ready to collaborate with the private sector in the actualization of his development goals. “He simply concluded that ANAMMCO will soon bounce back to its days of serial and concerted vehicle production,” Ugwuoke said. Earlier, the ANAMMCO Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Ben Ejindu, said that Enugu State was a stakeholder in ANAMMCO and that the current administration led by Mbah was poised to integrate the firm into its rapid strategic transformation plan for the state. Ejindu said that ANAMMCO had the potential to give employment to the teeming masses at every stratum of manpower. He added that the company was one of the greatest assets of Enugu State, and as such, Gov. Mbah would ensure that it became more operational. “Enugu State is a stakeholder and host state of ANAMMCO. The firm has the potential to give employment to middle-, low-, and high-level manpower within the state.” He stressed that Mbah was interested in ensuring that ANAMMCO was repositioned to provide robust, comprehensive auto sector services to the state and its residents. Also commenting on the tour, Mr. Uche Okeke, a director of the company, said that the visit was a major step in the right direction for the state in harnessing the huge potential of ANAMMCO. “The collaboration will provide cost-effective mass transit solutions, boost employment rates, and guarantee youth empowerment through relevant skills development,” he said. The company was incorporated on Jan. 17, 1977, and its factory was inaugurated on July 8, 1980, by the first executive president of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, while its commercial production of trucks began in January 1981. The incorporation of ANAMMCO was the fulfilment of a joint venture agreement between Nigeria and Daimler AG of Germany, which became the pioneering technical partner and co-shareholder.

THOUSANDS OF DOCTORS CONSIDERING LEAVING UK – GMC

THOUSANDS OF DOCTORS CONSIDERING LEAVING UK – GMC Factors driving thousands of doctors to consider leaving the UK have been revealed in new research published by the General Medical Council (GMC). The GMC had commissioned independent research into the reasons doctors may be considering, or have already made, a move abroad. The report, Identifying groups of migrating doctors, also makes recommendations for interventions that may persuade more of them to stay. Feeling undervalued, a lack of progression opportunities and disillusionment with the UK’s healthcare systems, are just some of the motivations researchers identified that make doctors want to leave. A survey of doctors asked how likely they were to move abroad to practise medicine in the next 12 months, to which over 13% of those practising in the UK answered ‘very likely’. A further 17% said they were ‘fairly likely’. “This is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in the UK, but it also presents valuable insight into how healthcare leaders, employers and workforce planners can target interventions to improve conditions.” More than 3,000 doctors – including those who have left the UK to practise abroad, had left and since returned, or are currently still working in the UK – answered questions on how satisfied they felt day-to-day, their experiences of working in the UK and their attitudes towards migration. Following analysis of the data, researchers split doctors into six distinct groups based on shared attitudes and experiences towards work and life as a doctor in the UK: -1). Deep discontent: the most negative and most likely to say they will leave in the next year. These are doctors who are dissatisfied on multiple fronts with the political environment, UK healthcare systems and its effects on their wellbeing. -2). System sceptics: concerned about the direction of the health systems and dissatisfied with their own working conditions, these doctors feel undervalued and unsupported. Most likely to be attracted to English speaking countries where they feel there are better conditions. -3). Burnt-out: working in the UK has left this group exhausted and unsatisfied with a low level of personal wellbeing and work-life balance. -4). Mobile career developers: neutral about working in the UK but obstacles to career progression could tempt this group to leave. A high proportion qualified overseas. -5). Open to opportunity: a relatively happy group of doctors, who may consider working abroad for a new challenge. -6). Happy in the UK: the most positive, this group has a high proportion of doctors who qualified overseas and who are happy working in the UK but may return to their home country at some point due to those connections. The report recommends targeting the top three categories of ‘deep discontent’, ‘system sceptics’ and ‘burnt-out’ as a priority, viewing these as having the greatest chance of significant impact to the workforce. The report highlighted general improvements to workplace conditions could have the biggest impact on retention. Doctors in the largest three groups reported feeling overworked and under-supported. A negative view of UK practice was also a key factor estimated to impact the three largest groups of doctors. The report showed a widespread perception that the UK’s health systems are ill equipped to provide patients with the care they need. Over 75% of doctors reported feeling under-valued professionally, demonstrating a concern with pay. The research said increasing pay would reduce its importance as a reason to move abroad. ‘This is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in the UK, but it also presents valuable insight into how healthcare leaders, employers and workforce planners can target interventions to improve conditions. Though the number of doctors actually leaving to practise abroad in 2023 was comparably low, these findings are a warning to all should conditions…

US CRITICIZES ‘ARBITRARY ARRESTS’ OF EMEFIELE, NNAMDI KANU

US CRITICIZES ‘ARBITRARY ARRESTS’ OF GODWIN EMEFIELE, NNAMDI KANU The United States Government has criticized the arbitrary arrests of Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by security personnel in Nigeria. In its ‘2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Nigeria,’ published Tuesday on the U.S. Department of State’s website, the U.S. highlighted concerns about lengthy pre-trial detention, denying detainees access to court, and frustrating the country’s judicial system. The report revealed that in the prosecution of corruption cases, law enforcement and intelligence agencies did not always follow due process, resulting in the arrest of suspects without appropriate arrest and search warrants. Regarding Emefiele’s case, the report detailed that he was detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) “for investigative reasons” on June 10. Although a Federal High Court in Lagos granted him bail on July 25, ordering him to be held at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until bail was made, the DSS attempted to arrest him again, leading to a confrontation between DSS agents and Nigerian Correctional Service officers. Similarly, Nnamdi Kanu, designated as a leader of a government-designated terrorist organization, IPOB, was detained by the DSS on national security grounds. Despite being charged with treason, terrorism, and illegal possession of firearms, Kanu fled abroad in 2017 after skipping bail, only to be arrested and returned to Nigeria in 2021. In 2022, an appeal court in Abuja dropped all charges against Kanu and ordered his release, but the federal government appealed. The Supreme Court overturned the appeals court ruling on December 15, stating that Kanu faced terrorism charges despite acknowledging rights violations during his arrest and extradition. Kanu remained incarcerated at the year’s end. The report also highlighted challenges within Nigeria’s judicial system, including a shortage of trial judges, trial backlogs, endemic corruption, bureaucratic inertia, and undue political influence. It said delays in cases were exacerbated by logistical issues, such as the need for more vehicles to transport detainees to court and authorities losing case files.Overall, the U.S. expressed concerns about Nigeria’s judicial system’s inadequacies, emphasizing the need for fair and transparent legal processes to uphold human rights.

APC SUPPORTERS ATTACKED, PREVENTED IGBO VOTERS FROM VOTING DURING 2023 ELECTION – US REPORT

APC SUPPORTERS ATTACKED, PREVENTED IGBO VOTERS FROM VOTING DURING 2023 ELECTION – US REPORT The United States Government has analysed how supporters of Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), attacked and prevented supporters of opposition parties, particularly Igbo people, from exercising their voting rights during the Lagos State governorship election in March 2023. In a report titled, ‘2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Nigeria’, the US Department of State noted that the recent 2023 general election in the most populous African country was characterised by irregularities and violent incidents. The report mentioned that several observers who were present during the election opined that the results of polls largely reflected the wills of the voters despite voters’ intimidation and suppression in some parts of the country. It says, “Abuses or Irregularities in Recent Elections: National elections were widely reported to have reflected the will of voters, despite technical and logistical difficulties, and some irregularities. “Many independent observers assessed the results of the presidential, legislative, and state-level elections during the year reflected the will of voters, despite reports of voter suppression and vote buying, campaigning at polling stations, lack of ballot secrecy, violence, and intimidation. “During the March 18 state election in Lagos, All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters reportedly intimidated and suppressed voters in Igbo-dominated areas, which Labour Party presidential candidate and ethnically Igbo Peter Obi won in the February 25 national election. “Viral videos on social media showed APC supporters in Ojo threatening to attack ethnic Igbo voters presumed to be pro-Obi. In Eti-Osa, APC supporters also attacked journalists and, in some cases, shut down voting and prevented non-Yoruba voters from accessing polls.”“They similarly destroyed property and physically blocked voters in Amuwo-Odofin. According to videos posted on social media, police officers were present but failed to respond to attacks. There was no evidence that alleged perpetrators were arrested or prosecuted,” it added.
