VICTORIOUS RANGERS SHUT DOWN ENUGU
VICTORIOUS RANGERS SHUT DOWN ENUGU Winners of the Nigerian Premier League, Rangers International Football Club of Enugu rode an early morning downpour into Enugu in a private jet to the thunderous applause of its fans and excited air travellers and airport staff. In the entourage of the jubilant players was Dr Ike Chioke, the Group Managing Director of Afrinvest West Africa, whose sponsorship of the club is credited with Rangers’ amazing run to victory in the Nigerian league. The team’s arrival with the coveted trophy, their eighth since inception, has been widely hailed as emblematic of the people’s admirable will to survive the present economic difficulties in the country. There has been a persisting myth that the people of the region have always performed better with their backs against the wall. To many people, therefore, the club’s recent victory is a timely invocation of their trademark survival instinct in an adverse environment. The highly elated fans chanted the club’s anthem and sang praises to God at the arrival wing of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport before heading into the city for the victory party at the iconic Michael Okpara Square. A mammoth crowd of supporters also gathered at Okpara Square to receive the trophy from their darling club and thank them for defeating their rivals across the country to win the highly contested league. Speaking at the occasion, the club’s general manager, Mr. Amobi Ezeaku, declared that Rangers was the true identity of the people of south-east Nigeria. He declared the readiness of the club to give Nigeria a strong chance in the coming continental championship starting in August and expressed the club’s gratitude to Afrinvest West Africa for sponsoring it. In his own remarks, the Group Managing Director of Afrinvest, Dr. Ike Chioke, recalled that when, in October 2023, the management of Afrinvest decided to take up the sponsorship of Rangers, they did not expect that the club would go all the way to win the league shield. “We are excited that less than ten months later, we are gathered here to celebrate a sweet victory,” he observed, declaring the unflinching support of Afrinvest for Rangers as the club gears up to hoist Nigeria’s flag among other clubs in Africa in August this year.Formed in 1970, Rangers has remained a symbol of resilience, a never-say-die spirit, and the rippling ambition of South East Nigeria all through its history.
RANGERS INTERNATIONAL: RETURN OF FLYING ANTELOPES
RANGERS INTERNATIONAL: RETURN OF FLYING ANTELOPES ANTELOPES do not fly. That’s why I often wondered why Rangers International Football Club of Enugu are nicknamed ‘the Flying Antelopes’. I know the genesis of the name ‘Rangers’. It is a deadly and destructive cannon used by Biafran soldiers during the bloody Nigerian Civil War. In ‘fighting’ their way back to the mainstream life in Nigeria, and in shedding the toga of a defeated people after the Civil War, some Igbo leaders set up the football club to fast track their re-integration and chose the name ‘Rangers’ to reflect strength, power and an indomitable fighting and winning spirit. One year after the end of the war, the team played its way to the finals of the most prestigious club competition in Nigeria at the time – the FA Cup! They were only halted in their march to the top only by the heroics of Amusa Adisa, the goalkeeper of WNDC FC, the team that later became IICC Shooting Stars International FC. Adisa had dramatically caught a last-minute penalty kick taken by Godwin Achebe, Captain of the Green Eagles (before and immediately after the War) and of Rangers FC, that would have possibly helped the team to go on and win a match they were dominating up till that point in the dramatic match. That’s how Rangers lost their first major final match by 2-1 to a team that would become their greatest rival in Nigerian football through the decades since then. That same year, 1971, in a competition that was referred to as an ‘emergency league’, Rangers FC emerged the league champions for the first time. But it was in 1974 that their three-year dominance of Nigerian football truly began. From that year, they went on to win the FA Cup three times and the league cup twice, back-to-back. These achievements were unprecedented in Nigeria’s football history and have not been matched 50 years after. Remarkably, it was not only the victories that made Rangers International FC famous and a great team. It was inthe manner of their performances on the field of play. They played with uncommon passion and determination. They had very skillful, very strong and very fast players in all departments on the field, with a goalkeeper who,at about 6 ft 5 inches tall, was a real giant between the posts. Emmanuel Okala went on to become the most celebrated goalkeeper with his award of Africa’s Best Player in 1978 by the African Sports Journalists Union. Rangers International FC always and everywhere played as if possessed, contesting for every ball on the field as if their lives depended on it, physically intimidating and dominating teams with their pphysicality, power and speed, leaving a physical or mental ‘scar’ on every opposing team. In 1977, Rangers FC added the appellation ‘International’ to its name when it won the Africa Cup-winners Cup, only the second Nigerian club side to win the same continental trophy. One year earlier, in 1976, IICC Shooting Stars International FC had blazed the international success trail. That achievement meant a great deal in Nigerian football and to the global followers of the great club based inEnugu. To mark the 40th anniversary of winning the continental trophy, in 2017, the clubs patrons and supporters organised and held the biggest celebration in the history of the team in Houston, Texas, USA.Why USA? Most of the surviving players of the 1970s and 1980s had moved to the USA for studies or in pursuit of a better life. It was, therefore, a great opportunity to re-unite and celebrate them in an audience of members of the Igbo community in the USA with a surprise-guest to embellish the historic event.… a Ranger That Never Played For Rangers InternationalWhen…

Enugu Rangers emerged winners of the 2023-2024 NPFL campaign on matchday 37, a week to the end of the season following their home victory over Bendel Insurance. They beat Gombe United 1-2 away from home to finish the campaign with 70 points in 38 games. During the trophy presentation ceremony, the Enugu-based side received a mock cheque of 150 million as the prize money for winning the league on Sunday, June 23. In an interview with veteran journalist, Mitchell Obi on Sports Salsa, Davidson Owumi admitted that the prize money has not gotten to the league winners. Owumi added that the league body is working on releasing the money to the club within seven days in line with its regulations. He also added that the league body was aiming to make the payment during the FA Cup final between Abia Warriors and El-Kanemi Warriors in Lagos on Saturday, June 30, 2024. He said, “They have been given the mock cheque and they should receive their prize money cheque in the next few days, hopefully they will get it if they come for the 2024 President’s Federation Cup this weekend because it ought not to be more than seven working days after they win the league.” In his assessment of the just concluded 2023-2024 NPFL season, Owumi added: “The NFF put up a good selection of people to be in the NPFL board and the clubs too were also cooperative, while the press was there too. “It was a win-win situation for the entire sectors involved in the league. We could not have done anything without the fans. It is just the beginning of a very long journey.” Meanwhile, the 2024-2025 NPFL season will commence on August 31, 2024. But Davidson Owumi said though the fixtures and the start date for the forthcoming league were ready, they are tentative until they are approved by the Club Owners and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) during the league body’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). “From the NPFL internal workings, we already have that one in place, but the league board also need to call the Congress of Nigeria Clubs for them to agree”, Owumi said.“It is the only thing left to be done because the fixtures, dates and other things are ready. But we cannot say that because the Congress of Clubs need to ratify it so that we do not jump the gun.”

ENUGU RANGERS VETERANS TRUST: PRESERVING MEMORY, HONOURING A LEGACY
ENUGU RANGERS VETERANS TRUST: PRESERVING MEMORY, HONOURING A LEGACY By Chidi Anselm Odinkalu Umuawulu, a sleepy settlement in Awka, the capital of Anambra State in the south-east, is the unlikely origin of one of the greatest sporting resumes ever to come out of Nigeria. In the bowels of this village lies Holy Cross High School, the site from which story sprouted.Until the politicians contrived to destroy education generally, Nigeria’s High Schools used to guarantee an interminable production line of rarefied sporting talent. This role pre-dated Independence. Historian, Peter Alegi, recalls that in territories – such as Nigeria – ruled by the British, missionaries and colonialists formed steeped in Victorian traditions, anchored their mutually complementary missions on “a belief that sport forged physically fit young men of sound moral character.” In the pantheon of sporting activities inspired by this belief, football was the undisputed king. In 1963, a young man arrived Holy Cross Umuawulu to begin his secondary education. Emmanuel Okala was 12 when his goalkeeping career began in Umuawulu. Born in May 1951, his contemporaries from then remember him as a rather spindly figure whose height took him to the lower reaches of the heavens. Even as a new arrival at the beginning of his High School journey at the time, those who beheld him acknowledged that they were in the presence of a generational phenomenon. In 1970, Emma joined a football club created around the talents of a few young men most of whom had been demobilized from the war. Its name was Rangers International Football Club of Enugu. At the time, the leading continental footballing super-star was Robert Mensah, the legendary goalkeeper of Ghana’s Black Stars and also of Ashanti Kotoko Football Club. After Mensah was killed in a stabbing incident on 2 November, 1971, the continent cried out for a new goalkeeping supremo. From his humble beginnings in Umuawulu, Emmanuel Okala rose rather effortlessly to become the country’s undisputed goalkeeper over the next decade, ultimately growing to fill the void created by the untimely passing of Robert Mensah. Emma’s influence grew to outstrip the role of the solitary minder at the rear of the outfield players. In 1978 the African Sports Journalists Union (ASJU) voted him as the African Footballer of the Year, the first person and the first Nigerian to win that distinction. By then, he was better known as the “Man Mountain” a moniker invented by leading football commentator, Ernest Okonkwo. Two years later, in 1980, Okala was goalkeeper of the national football team, then known as the Green Eagles, which won the African Cup of Nations (AfCON). The captain of that team was Christian Chukwu, who, like Emmanuel Okala, also began his footballing career as an “Academical” at the National Secondary School, Nike, on the outskirts of Enugu. Like Emmanuel Okala, Christian Chukwu was also born in 1951. From Nike National, he also joined the Enugu Rangers. As a footballer it was said that his “outstanding will to lead and motivate others earned him the nickname ‘Chairman’, as his colleagues saw him as an anchor of hope.” That story of hope was not confined to the soccer pitch. The Rangers Football Club for whom both Christian Chukwu and Emmanuel Okala were leading super-stars, embodied the hopes of the people of south-east Nigeria as they emerged from the ruins of an utterly destructive civil war at the beginning of 1970 bereft of both capital and dignity. The core of that team also included Johnny Egbuonu described by a leading sports publication as “a classic dribbler” who could “do anything with the ball.” Popularly known as “School Boy”, Johnny’s career also began in the High School. He was destined for a great career in the colours of his country…
LOSE OR WIN, RANGERS WEAR LEAGUE CROWN TODAY
WIN OR LOSE, RANGERS WEAR LEAGUE CROWN TODAY Enugu Rangers can afford to lose 56-0 this Sunday to Gombe United and erase the record negative goal difference of the already relegated side. Such a scoreline will not change the destiny of both sides as Rangers will merely enter the pitch to fulfill the fixtures for formality sake. They will be more interested in the post match event – their coronation as the new king of Nigerian league. A win will only add icing to the celebration cake, taking their points to 70, just three short of 73 obtained by the defunct Dolphins in the 2010/2011 season. But it is taking nothing away from Enugu Rangers who will be presented with the league trophy this Sunday by the NFF president, Ibrahim Musa Gusau. The NFF chieftain headlines a choice list of eminent guests expected at the occasion, which will see the champions, who will be crowned for the eighth time since a national football league was introduced in 1972. Their success this season was confirmed last weekend when they beat Bendel Insurance 2-0 at home while their three rivals – Remo Stars, Shooting Stars and Enyimba lost their respective away games with identical scorelines of 2-1.
ENUGU RANGERS SIT PRETTY ON TOP OF PREMIER LEAGUE, DEFEAT BAYELSA UNITED 3-0
ENUGU RANGERS SIT PRETTY ON TOP OF PREMIER LEAGUE, DEFEAT BAYELSA UNITED 3-0 Enugu Rangers may have broken loose from the pack following their comprehensive 3-0 victory over Bayelsa United on Sunday. As if to aid Rangers’ hold of the top position, their closest rivals, Remo Stars who were initially just a point behind fell like papers blown by the huricane, losing 3-2 to Kwara United. Their loss dealt a big blow on their title aspirations as they are now four points behind Enugu Rangers and had also narrowed their goal difference. They are now third having been overtaken by Enyimba who have better goal difference even though both are with 56 points. Shooting Stars who suddenly peaked in the second half of the season are fast pacing up, getting to the fourth position and three points behind Remo Stars. They were dealt a blow in the added time as Katsina United’s Michael Okoro got an added time goal against to stalemate scores at 2-2. Just as Enugu Rangers are at the cusp of the championship, the fates of Gombe United and Heartland appear already decided as the second tier Nigeria National League are already waiting to welcome them next season. Akwa United may have navigated their ways out of relegation waters following their 2-1 away win over Lobi Stars. Akwa United are now 15th on the log. In Jos, former champions, Plateau and Niger Tornadoes played uninspiring goalless while relegation-troubled Heartland of Owerri spanked Gombe United 3-0 just as Kano Pillars dimmed Doma United 3-1. All the results: Sunshine Stars 0-0 Bendel Insurance Rivers United 4-1 Sporting Lagos Lobi Stars 1-2 Akwa United Kwara United 3-2 Remo Stars Katsina United 2-2 Shooting Stars Kano Pillars 3-1 Doma United Heartland 3-0 Gombe United Enugu Rangers 3-0 Bayelsa United Abia Warriors 0-1 Enyimba Plateau United 0-0 Niger Tornadoes
