NIGERIA ISSUES URGENT SAFETY ADVISORY TO CITIZENS IN SOUTH AFRICA AMID TENSIONS

OIP 58 4

The High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has issued a safety advisory to Nigerians residing in South Africa following rising tensions, particularly in the Eastern Cape Province.

In the advisory released from Pretoria, the mission urged Nigerian nationals to exercise heightened caution and prioritise their personal safety in light of the evolving situation.

The commission advised citizens to limit movement, avoid interactions with unfamiliar individuals, and maintain a low profile at all times. It also called on Nigerians to strictly obey local laws and respect cultural norms within their host communities.

As part of precautionary measures, Nigerians were urged to suspend social and cultural gatherings, avoid making provocative statements on social or mainstream media, and steer clear of protests or demonstrations that could escalate tensions.

The advisory further cautioned against unnecessary display of wealth or flamboyance, while encouraging individuals to promptly report any security threats to local authorities.

Citizens were also advised to seek guidance from the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria or the Consulate General in Johannesburg if uncertain about safety procedures.

The diplomatic mission reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad and urged full compliance with the outlined measures during this period of uncertainty.
