The head of the Catholic Church and Pontiff of the Vatican City, Pope Leo XIV, has strongly condemned violence and armed conflict, declaring that God does not support war.

Speaking during the Palm Sunday Mass at St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff reflected on the teachings of Jesus Christ, reminding the faithful that “those who take the sword will perish by the sword.”

He cautioned political and global leaders against promoting violence, stressing that Christ does not endorse aggression or conflict in any form.

Quoting from the Book of Isaiah, the Pope said, “Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood,” emphasizing the belief that acts of violence invalidate appeals for divine intervention.

Emphasising the message of peace, he added, “Jesus is the King of Peace, who rejects war, and no one can use Him to justify violence. He does not heed the prayers of those who wage war, but turns away from them. From the cross, Christ calls out once more: God is love. Show mercy. Lay down your weapons. Remember that you are brothers and sisters.”

He further expressed hope that the suffering caused by violence would eventually come to an end, assuring that the pain of victims would be wiped away, just as frost melts under the warmth of the rising sun.
