The Labour Party (LP) has postponed its congresses and national convention, originally scheduled to commence on Thursday.

The announcement comes less than 24 hours after the party zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the south.

Nenadi Usman, national chairperson of the LP, who made the disclosure in Abuja, declined to name any potential candidate, stating that the party would adhere to internal democratic processes.

In a statement on Wednesday, Ken Asogwa, senior special adviser (media) to the LP national chairperson, said the party has shifted the congresses at state level and the national convention, both of which form critical parts of its preparations ahead of the 2027 general election.

“It would be recalled that, according to the party’s previously released timetable, ward congresses were slated for March 26, 2026, followed by local government congresses on March 28, state congresses on March 31, while the national convention was scheduled for April 11, 2026,” the statement reads.

“However, arising from a combined stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee (NWC) and representatives of the labour unions, the party resolved to shift the exercise.”

Asogwa explained that the decision was aimed at providing ample opportunity for members and prospective Nigerians to participate fully in the ongoing membership re-registration exercise.

As part of efforts to “ensure a seamless and credible process”, the party inaugurated a 45-member committee to oversee both the congresses and the convention.

“The committee is chaired by Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, member representing Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives,” the statement added.

“Other members include Comrade Salisu N. Mohammed, Hon. Obinna Aguocha, Hon. Amaobi Ogah, Hon. Ibe Okwara, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Hon. Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Hon. Benedict Etanabene, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, Comrade Lawson Osagie, Mrs. Imaobong Ufot, among others.”

Usman charged new committee members to discharge their responsibilities with utmost diligence, impartiality, and commitment.

“She urged them to take full advantage of the postponement to ensure that all necessary preparations are thoroughly completed, guaranteeing hitch-free congresses and convention,” the statement reads.

The party also commended its supporters and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their understanding regarding the adjustment, assuring that a new timetable will be communicated in due course.
