Former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Professor Sam Amadi has explained why he shifted his political support from former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal to former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi.
Speaking during an interview, Amadi offered insights into Tambuwal’s personality and his own role in the former governor’s presidential ambition, describing Tambuwal as a widely acceptable political figure at the time.
“I was his head of Strategy because I felt he was acceptable across the country, but when Peter Obi came, I saw Peter Obi as better,” Amadi said.
According to Amadi, his initial backing of Tambuwal was based on a strategic assessment of national appeal and perceived ability to unify diverse political interests across Nigeria. He noted that Tambuwal’s experience as Speaker of the House of Representatives and two-term governor positioned him as a strong contender within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
However, Amadi explained that his perspective changed significantly after Peter Obi appeared and his candidacy energized a large segment of the electorate, particularly young voters and professionals seeking governance reforms.
He said Obi’s entry into the race presented what he described as a clearer reformist agenda, stronger credibility on economic management, and a leadership style that resonated more deeply with Nigerians frustrated by the political status quo.
Amadi stressed that his decision was not driven by personal animosity or political rivalry, but by a reassessment of who he believed best represented the kind of leadership Nigeria needed at the time.
