NIGERIA CRISIS ISN’T COMPLEX—MUSLIMS ARE MURDERING CHRISTIANS,’ NORWEGIAN JOURNALIST MISTEREGGEN FIRES BACK AT AL JAZEERA

Norwegian journalist and human rights advocate Rebecca Mistereggen has condemned Al Jazeera over its recent opinion piece denying claims of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mistereggen accused the Qatar-based news outlet of downplaying the targeted killings of Christians in northern Nigeria, describing the situation as “Jihadic genocide.”

“Nigeria’s crisis isn’t complex, let me help you: Muslims are murdering Christians and taking their villages. You, Al Jazeera, know it by its Islamic term: Jihad. Jihadic genocide is what it is,” she said.

Her comments came in response to an article published by Al Jazeera on October 2, 2025, titled “No, Bill Maher, there is no ‘Christian genocide’ in Nigeria.” The piece, authored by Gimba Kakanda — Senior Special Assistant to Nigeria’s Vice President on Research and Analytics — argued that the country’s conflicts are rooted in ethnic, economic, and territorial disputes rather than religion.

Kakanda maintained that Western commentators like American TV host Bill Maher have exaggerated the scale and motive of violence against Christians, misrepresenting Nigeria’s complex internal crises as religious warfare.

However, Mistereggen’s remarks have reignited global debate over the scale of religious persecution in Nigeria.

While Al Jazeera insists the violence is multidimensional, critics argue that the systematic attacks on Christian communities in the Middle Belt and northern regions show clear signs of religious targeting.

Nigeria’s crisis isn’t complex, let me help you: Muslims are murdering Christians and taking their villages. You, Aljazeera, know it by its Islamic term: Jihad.
