I ESTABLISHED RADIO BIAFRA TO PROMOTE TRUTH, PEACE – NNAMDI KANU
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), stated that he established Radio Biafra to “promote truth, peace, and the fight for fundamental human rights.”
He made this statement during an interrogation by the Department of State Services (DSS), a video of which was played in open court on Tuesday as part of his ongoing trial for alleged terrorism and treasonable felony.
Kanu was re-arraigned on March 21 before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
During Tuesday’s session, prosecution counsel Adegboyega Awomolo informed the court that he had filed an ex parte application, dated April 10, requesting the protection of witness identities.
“The essence is for the safety and security of state officers who would be part of the witnesses,” he said.
Justice Omotsho granted the application following a statement from Kanu Agabi, counsel to the defendant, who raised no objection. The prosecution then called its first witness, identified only as “AAA” for security reasons.
AAA, a staff member of the Department of State Services (DSS), testified that he was part of the team that arrested Nnamdi Kanu on October 15, 2015, at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Lagos.
According to the witness, Kanu was taken into custody and several items were seized, including broadcasting equipment found in his hotel room.
Footage presented in court showed Kanu admitting to establishing the radio station, which he claimed was registered with the UK government.
He acknowledged that broadcasting in Nigeria without registration with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) was illegal.
Kanu further stated that the station was funded by supporters from various countries and that he disclosed his financial records to UK authorities.
In a separate statement read in court, Kanu alleged that the DSS interrogated him without legal representation, in violation of his rights.
All exhibits presented through the witness were admitted into evidence.
