EL RUFAI BEMOANS STATE OF ENVY AMONG NIGERIA’S POLITICAL CLASS
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has taken to his verified Twitter account to share a reflective piece on the destructive impact of envy within Nigeria’s political system.
Citing a quote from U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, who stated, “None of us has to fail for all of us to succeed. And in unity, there is strength,” El-Rufai used this sentiment as a lens to examine the current state of Nigerian politics.
El-Rufai pointed out that envy—a sentiment that he believes demands “everyone to fail for one to succeed”—is alarmingly common among Nigeria’s political leaders.
He noted that those who exhibit competence, capacity, and commitment often become targets of envy, rather than being recognized and supported for their contributions.
“Competence, capacity, and commitment are some personal leadership qualities that attract the envy of those lacking or deficient in these indices,” El-Rufai wrote.
He described envy as a catalyst for hatred, which in turn leads to destructive behaviors, including perjury, malicious prosecution, persecution, unlawful imprisonment, torture, and even murder.
The former governor expressed concern that envy has become an “incurable disease” within Nigeria, particularly among the political elite.
He suggested that this issue is contributing to the country’s broader challenges, including the continuous deterioration of leadership qualities.
“Societies succeed or fail depending on these personal and institutional qualities,” El-Rufai added, stressing the importance of competence, capacity, and commitment in leadership.
El-Rufai’s reflection also touched on the question of whether envy can be cured in Nigeria. He expressed doubt, stating, “Personally, I doubt it.”
However, he emphasized that despite his skepticism, the “incurable virus of envy” must be confronted and degraded if Nigeria is to achieve its full potential as a leading nation within the Black Race.
The former governor’s comments have resonated with many Nigerians, sparking conversations about the role of envy in the nation’s political and social dynamics.
His call to address this issue highlights the need for a collective effort to foster unity and mutual respect among political leaders and citizens alike.
