OBAMA’S WIFE MAY REPLACE BIDEN AS DEMOCRATS CANDIDATE IN US ELECTION

Speculation is swirling within the Democratic Party that President Joe Biden may announce his decision not to seek re-election at the party’s convention in Chicago in August 2024, instead proposing Michelle Obama, the wife of former President Barack Obama, as his preferred candidate.

The German publication Der Spiegel has reported on these discussions, which have gained traction amid concerns about the age and popularity of both Biden and his likely Republican opponent, Donald Trump.

According to Der Spiegel, the Democratic Party has already included Michelle Obama in its polls of potential candidates, signaling serious consideration of her as a possible nominee.

The publication notes that “many Americans dream of a female president,” suggesting that Obama’s candidacy could tap into a strong desire for change and representation within the electorate.

The speculation surrounding Biden’s potential withdrawal is fueled in part by the president’s age. At 82 years old, Biden is the oldest person to ever hold the office, and two-thirds of Americans believe he is too old to lead the country for another four years.

This sentiment is not limited to Biden, however, as many voters also express reluctance to see Trump, who is only a few years younger, return to the White House.

Trump’s legal troubles, including allegations of paying hush money to a porn actress and possible financial fraud, have also raised concerns among voters.

Der Spiegel suggests that these factors, combined with the advanced age of both candidates, have led to “deep disappointment” among the American public, with the publication stating, “Never before in the history of the United States have two candidates faced each other who would be so unpopular.”

While Michelle Obama has been floated as a potential candidate, she has previously expressed little interest in pursuing a political career.

In her memoirs, the former first lady admitted that her experiences over the past decade have not changed her views on entering politics. This stance could potentially impact her popularity among voters, should she decide to run, according to Der Spiegel.

The publication also notes that the speculation surrounding Obama’s potential candidacy is a product of the current political climate, with voters seeking fresh faces and new perspectives in the wake of the tumultuous Trump years and the challenges faced by the Biden administration.

The Times cannot independently verify this claim. However, Michelle Obama’s office has clarified earlier this year that she has no intention of running for president in 2024, putting an end to rumors circulating in both parties.

Former President Barack Obama’s vocal support for President Joe Biden’s re-election has fueled questions about Michelle Obama’s potential involvement in the campaign.

While some Democrats expressed a desire to see her play a larger role, Republicans entertained fantasies of her replacing Biden on the 2024 ticket to undermine the president’s political standing.

Crystal Carson, director of communications for Michelle Obama’s office, reiterated the former first lady’s stance on the matter, stating, “As former First Lady Michelle Obama has expressed several times over the years, she will not be running for president.”

Carson emphasized Mrs. Obama’s support for President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ re-election campaign.Sources familiar with discussions surrounding Michelle Obama’s involvement in the Biden campaign indicate that while she intends to assist, her engagement will likely be limited, reflecting her other commitments and longstanding reluctance to re-enter full-time politics.

LAWYER WHO LED PROSECUTION AGAINST TRUMP RESIGNS, FLEES US Jack Smith, the special counsel who led prosecution against United States President-elect Donald Trump, has resigned and fled the country ahead of Trump’s inauguration on January 20. According to statements of officials in the document submitted to the US District Judge Aileen Cannon, Smith had completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7 this year before he finally took leave of the United States Department of Justice on January 10. The high-profile cases handled by Smith involved Trump’s alleged mishandling of confidential documents after he left office and his alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election which he contested and lost. Smith, a former war crimes prosecutor, was appointed in November 2022 to steer the affairs of the Justice Department’s ongoing investigations into Trump’s cases. But with Trump’s victory in the November 5 election, Smith dismissed the cases, citing a Justice Department rule against prosecuting incumbent presidents. While asking courts to drop the charges, Smith’s legal team, however, acknowledged the validity of the cases but stated that they could not pursue them in view of the Trump’s impeding return to the Presidency. This development signals the collapse of charges against Donald Trump, allowing him to take office without facing legal repercussions. Trump had earlier threatened to fire Smith upon his assumption of office as second term US President.

GHANA’S NEW PRESIDENT REDUCES MINISTRIES FROM 30 TO 23 TO SAVE COST

GHANA’S NEW PRESIDENT REDUCES MINISTRIES FROM 30 TO 23 TO SAVE COST Ghana President John Mahama has reduced the country’s ministries from 30 to 23 in a bid to cut government spending. Mahama’s decision – an executive order – to trim the number of government ministries was contained in a gazette dated January 9 – two days after he took office. The West African country would no longer have the ministries of information, sanitation and water resources, national security, railway development, parliamentary affairs, public enterprises, and chieftaincy and religious affairs. The scrapped ministries were in place under Nana Akufo-Addo, immediate-past president of Ghana. The order established the ministries of finance, health, interior, defence, education, energy and green transition, roads and highways, transport, sports and recreation, justice, lands and natural resources, and local government and chieftaincy and affairs. Others are foreign affairs, communication, digital technology, environment, science and technology, youth development and empowerment, works, housing and water resources, gender, children and social protection, tourism, culture and creative arts, labour, jobs and employment, food and agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture, and trade, agribusiness and industry. Mahama, who was first in Ghana’s Jubilee House between 2012 and 2017, returned to power after defeating former Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia. The president polled 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55 percent of the vote cast, while Bawumia gathered 4,657,304 votes with 41.6 percent. Bawumia conceded defeat before the official results were announced. Mahama’s cost-cutting move is in contrast to that of President Bola Tinubu, his Nigerian counterpart, who increased ministries to 48 in 2023 from 44 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu’s decision has faced widespread criticism as Nigeria struggles with a deepening cost-of-living crisis.
