NIGERIA, ONLY COUNTRY WHERE JUDGES DECIDE ELECTION RESULTS – FEMI FALANA
Femi Falana, a senior advocate for Nigeria, has expressed his concern about the prevalent involvement of judges in determining election results in Nigeria.
He argued that Nigeria is the only country in the world where election results are decided by judges, emphasizing that this situation should not be the norm.
During the interview with Channels Television, Falana pointed to recent successful elections in Liberia and Sierra Leone, countries that received assistance from Nigeria to restore political stability and law and order. He questioned why Nigeria, which has played a role in assisting other nations in organising elections, continues to rely on judges to determine election outcomes.
According to him, “Nigeria is the only country in the world today where results of elections are determined by judges. It shouldn’t be so.
“We have just witnessed in Liberia, a country that Nigeria assisted to restore political stability. We just witnessed an election there recently.
“We witnessed an election, a successful election in Serria Leone. Again, another country assisted by Nigeria to have law and order restored. So, if this country can organise elections, why are we asking judges to determine the results of our election?”With respect to the decision of the Court of Appeal, that is not the end of the road; all those who are desatisfied will have to go to the Supreme Court.”
