The Congolese government has debunked rumours of a coup attempt against President Denis Sassou Nguesso.

The rumours began circulating on social media on Sunday, September 17, 2023, but were quickly denied by government officials.

Thierry Moungalla, the country’s Minister of Information, said in a tweet on Sunday that the rumours were “false and unfounded.”

He urged the public to remain calm and to avoid spreading misinformation.

The rumors of a coup attempt come as Congo is preparing for presidential elections in 2024.

Sassou Nguesso has been in power since 1997, and there is growing opposition to his rule.

The rumours of a coup attempt in Congo are likely to raise tensions in the country ahead of the presidential elections.

Sassou Nguesso is a controversial figure, and there is a risk of violence if he tries to hold on to power beyond 2024.
